Technique in brief

On Sweden's west coast, fishing is done from a boat with pirks and natural bait over wrecks and drop-offs; on the east coast, targeted cod fishing is heavily restricted. Because the rules change annually, checking the current regulations is the first and most important step.

Tackle

A boat rod with a casting weight of 60–200 g, braided line and pirks in a weight class suited to the current. A fishfinder saves more time on the coast than any choice of bait.

Handling the catch

Cod fought up from greater depths suffer from pressure equalisation problems and often do not survive release. Anyone who does not want or is not permitted to retain fish should fish in shallower water instead of fighting deep-water fish.

Frequently asked questions

Can you fish for cod in Sweden?

With restrictions on the west coast, and not at all in parts of the Baltic Sea. The rules are adjusted annually — before travelling, check the current version with Havs- och vattenmyndigheten.

Why are cod stocks in the Baltic Sea in such poor condition?

Overfishing, oxygen depletion in the deep basins and altered feeding conditions have reduced stocks over the years. The EU therefore regulates the fishery very restrictively.

Is cod relevant in your catalogue at all?

Only at individual coastal locations. Our focus is on inland waters, where cod naturally do not occur.
