The cheapest crossing is not automatically the best. For southern Sweden, Rostock or Travemünde to Trelleborg are direct corridors. For the west coast and onward travel towards Värmland, Kiel–Göteborg can significantly alter the road section. Therefore compare total travel time, arrival time and the final leg – not only the ticket price.
Give the complete vehicle details
Book the actual overall length of the towing vehicle, drawbar, trailer and overhanging boat. Height, roof load, engine bracket and bicycles can also change the fare class. Incorrectly stated dimensions are more likely to lead to a surcharge or space problems at the port than to a good start to the journey.
Day or night crossing
A fast daytime route saves cabin costs, but may mean a long onward journey after arrival. A night crossing is useful if you set off rested and reach the destination region on the same day. When comparing, also include cabin, fuel, tolls and a possible overnight stop.
Buffer at the port
The ferry operator states the binding check-in time for the specific departure. Also allow for traffic jams, refuelling stops and trailer manoeuvring. Before departure, the timetable, port address and check-in rule should be saved as a screenshot on your phone.
The final stretch
Before booking accommodation, check whether arrival after a late ferry arrival is possible. Narrow access roads, key handover and a launch site can be more important than ten minutes of fare comparison for the ferry.
