Description from the source
Show the full source description

Nissan is a nationally important watercourse for salmon and sea trout, stretching from its mouth in Laholmsbukten and approx. 20 km upstream to Oskarström. With a length of 186 km, the river is one of southern Sweden's longest rivers. The southern sections, just before the river flows into Laholmsbukten, have a long tradition of good fishing opportunities. It was in Nissan and in the sea off Halmstad that the famous Halmstad salmon was caught and exported as early as the 1600s. Much salmon was fished in our rivers, but in the 20s the last salmon were caught, due to deteriorated water quality. Now the salmon is back, to the great delight of all anglers. The fishing area offers a wide range of varied fishing for both the experienced fly fisher and the happy amateur. Spinning is the most common, but Nissan also offers quite a few really fine fly-fishing stretches. At Slottsmöllans power station in Halmstad there is a popular spinning stretch. For fly fishers, the stretches in Sennan and Sperlingsholm are good. Taxipoolen by Sennans Taxi is popular, as are Militärvadet and Helgarpsforsen. Colourful flies are recommended because the water is dark and amber-coloured.See PDF for further information: HistoryThe USA's minister to Sweden during the late 1800s, William Widgery Thomas Jr, writes in his book “From Castle to Cottage” that at Oskarström there was “good salmon fishing during the summer”. He had a favourite spot by a rock in Maredsforsen, which was given the name Minister Thomas's rock. In the clear, almost amber-coloured river water, he counted 100 salmon jumps in 12 minutes. On the 1920s there was a sharp decline in water quality and the last salmon were caught at Slottsmöllan 1921-22. The main reason for this negative period was the development of hydroelectric power stations and pulp mills. Active fisheries management has been carried out in Nissan in recent years and liming has been significant.First, in 1970 a hatchery was built at Oskarström and in this year 0,6 million fertilised roe from 40 stripped females was placed in it. In 1979 the first salmon smolts were released experimentally in Nissan. Trout had then been caught in Nissan for several years. The recapture rate has been very good. Today salmon again reproduce naturally in Nissan and Senneån. The first salmon fry was found in the summer of 1981. In the spring of 1988, 5000 natural smolts were estimated to have migrated out of Nissan. More than 30000 smolts are stocked annually. Within the area there is one or more accessible water. For more information, see the fishing area's map where these points are marked, or contact Nissans FVOF. Free fishing for children and young people up to and including the age of 12 years. Only when accompanied by a guardian/adult/person who has a valid permit (on that person's quota) Nissans fisheries management area association was formed in 1987 to make fishing accessible to the public.Active fisheries management has been carried out in Nissan in recent years and liming has been significant.
