About SandbäckstjärnSandbäckstjärn was previously a so-called put-and-take water where catch-ready rainbow trout were stocked regularly. From 2023-08-07, the tarn has reverted to being a natural water and only occasional stocking is carried out; see specific information about the fish below. The tarn is easily accessible from the western side, where there is a footpath and firm ground. The eastern side consists of quaking bog and swamp forest, and boots or waders are needed here to keep your feet dry. A few places are more easily accessible and there is also a fishing platform on this side. Clearance is carried out regularly to facilitate sport fishing. There are disabled-accessible jetties adjacent to the car park at the lake's southern end. Barbecue areas are located by the tarn and, like the jetties, are maintained by Karlstads kommun. Sport fishing is managed by Sportfiskarnas regional office in Karlstad. In addition to occasional rainbow trout, Sandbäckstjärn also contains pike, tench, crucian carp and roach. Contact us for more information.Specific information about the fish in SandbäckstjärnSandbäckstjärn is a water where pike, roach, tench and crucian carp occur naturally and where catch-ready rainbow trout were previously stocked at regular intervals. The tarn is located adjacent to the rescue service and its training area in Karlstad. For many years, a substance called PFAS has been used in the extinguishing agent used. This substance has contaminated the ground adjacent to the tarn and has also leaked into the water. The EU recently introduced stricter limit values for this substance and, in fish caught for consumption, the new limit value is currently 8 nanograms/g fish flesh. In spring 2023, rainbow trout that had spent at least 6 months in the tarn were sampled, and in these fish 3,8-11ng/g was measured, with an average value of 7,9ng/g. This has led Karlstad municipality to issue dietary advice for fish caught in Sandbäckstjärn from 17/5 2023, stating that you should eat a maximum of 1-3 portions/year of rainbow trout from the tarn. Fish born and raised in the tarn should not be consumed at all.
