To improve the living conditions and reproduction opportunities of fish in Björkån in the long term, a project has been under way since 2007 in cooperation with Länsstyrelsen, Sollefteå kommun and the fisheries conservation area. The aim is, as far as possible, to recreate Björkån as it looked before the extensive log-driving clearance carried out in the 50s-60s. Migration barriers have been removed so that fish can now migrate and spawn naturally. Stone excavated onto the banks has been put back into the river. Old natural side channels have been reopened. After restoration, the river has become shallower and wider. Trees and stones in the river make sport fishing somewhat more difficult, but in return we get a river that holds more and larger fish.
