Lake Möckeln is the third largest lake on the Småland lake plateau after Bolmen and Åsnen and is located southwest of Växjö, near the border with Skåne. Möckeln is a nutrient-poor so-called brown-water lake, or dystrophic lake, with a relatively low pH naturally. Like other similar lakes in Sweden, Möckeln was affected by acidification and liming is now carried out regularly. Fish species found in Möckeln include perch, pike, zander, eel, burbot, bream, roach, silver bream, asp, rudd, ruffe, bleak, vendace and Wels catfish. The Wels catfish is Sweden's largest inland fish and has one of its four occurrences in the country in Möckeln (the others are the Emån in Småland, Båven in Södermanland and the lower Helgeåns water system, Kristianstads water kingdom in Skåne). Particularly in the north-western parts of the lake, around the mouth of the Agunnarydsån, the Wels catfish has a permanent and stable population. The Wels catfish is a protected fish and must be released immediately if caught. The largest Wels catfish caught in Möckeln and documented (in 1994) weighed 52 kg. The most common fish species in the lake are pike, perch, zander, bream and roach. Fishing for zander in particular is very popular in the lake. The lake has an area of 48 km² and lies approximately 136 metres above sea level. The greatest depth is 12 metres. The length is approximately 16 kilometres from north to south. The greatest width in the northern parts is almost 7 kilometres, but the southern and central parts are narrower at approximately 1 - 1,5 kilometres. There are three tributaries: the larger Helge å, which flows into Möckeln at Diö in the north-east, and the two smaller Lilla Helge å and Agunnarydsån, which flow into the lake in the far north-east and north-west respectively. The outflow from the lake is at the properties Älvanäs and Byvärma in the north-west, where the Helgeån then continues south towards Hanöbukten in eastern Skåne. There was an earlier outlet before the lake lowering in the southern part of the lake. This southward outlet connected Möckeln with Drivån via the now lowered lakes in Älmhult and Ormakulla. The southward water flow powered mills, now gone, in the villages of Slätthult and Kongstorp. Through lake lowerings and municipal land development in the 1900s, this former outlet has now, conversely, been transformed into an at times stagnant stormwater inflow to Möckeln. The water level can vary by approximately 1 metre up or down from the mean water line (137 to 135 metres above sea level) depending on precipitation and inflow, but the lake is not regulated. [Source: Wikipedia] Free fishing for children and young people up to and including the age of 15. Only handheld tackle. Free until the 16th birthday with angling, casting rod, fly fishing, ice fishing, does not apply to fishing with set lines The fisheries management area includes Möckeln, Steningen, Såganässjön and part of Helge å. The lakes are located in Älmhult and Ljungby municipalities in south-western Småland, Kronoberg County, just north of Älmhult.
