The lake is drained by the watercourse Hjåggmarksbäcken. The lake is approximately 2,5 kilometres long from north to south, and just over 1 kilometre wide at its widest point. Most of the lake has a depth of 3-4 metres. The lake naturally contains perch, pike, roach and burbot, as well as stocked trout and rainbow trout. Bäcksjön has three larger islands, and some smaller ones. One of the larger islands has a barbecue area and shelter. There are four bathing beaches at the lake, one in the northern part, two in the eastern part and one in the western part of the lake. There is also a bathing place at the lake's southern tip. The land around the lake is largely owned by Skogsstyrelsen, and Bäcksjö Båt- och fiskeklubb manages the fishing rights in the lake. Free fishing for children and young people up to and including the age of 15 years. Only when accompanied by a guardian/adult Bäcksjö Båt- och fiskeklubb is a non-profit association formed in 2024.The club manages the fishing rights and sells permits for Bäcksjön in Umeå municipality. All permit sales take place via iFiske.seThe club also rents out boat moorings at the lake. The club does not hire out boats.
