Description from the source
Show the full source description

Ås-Tolken lies with its western part in Borås and its eastern part in Ulricehamn Municipality. The lake is the source lake of Viskan and has clear, clean water. Tolken is an excellent fishing lake with large perch, pike, zander, eel, salmon trout and, not least, whitefish and vendace. Tench can also sometimes be caught. There are several islands in the lake. On one of them, Sundholmen, are the remains of Sundholmen Castle from the early 1500s. There is a boat ramp at the southern end of the lake by Hallabron and one at the northern end of the lake, at the start of the descent to Sjögården. The latter is near the old national road 40, south of the former Nice Inn. The bird and nature photographs were taken by Kjell Eliasson, Nabben, Äspered, and the fish photographs by Miles Mogren, Lerbäck, Äspered. BIRD PROTECTION AREA IN ÅS-TOLKEN. Lindö with surrounding waters in Ås-Tolken was declared a BIRD PROTECTION AREA by Länsstyrelsen from 2020-05-20. On 2021-03-26, Länsstyrelsen decided on reinforced protective measures (marked in bold below). The area is important for a protected and disturbance-sensitive bird species. Signs have been put up around the lake, including at the launching ramps. On the island there is a red-and-yellow sign reading "FÅGELSKYDD", informing of a prohibition on going ashore on the island during March, April, May and June and half of July (1 March-15 July). Note that staying within 300 m of the island is prohibited, although passage by boat is permitted 200 m from the island. In practice, however, the eastern side of Lindö is difficult to pass because of stone obstructions. A prohibition on all fishing within the protected area applies from 1 March to 15 July. Free fishing for children and young people up to and including the age of 15. The association's purpose is to maintain and develop the fish stock in the lake and to enable the public to access fishing by purchasing fishing permits.
