Almaån (Övre)

Almaåns övre fiskevårdsområdesförening welcomes you to fish in the upper part of Almaån; our stretch of the river begins at Finjasjön and extends down to Strömsfors and Brittedal (see the map). The upper part is fairly shallow and easily accessible; the lower part is more varied and partly more difficult to reach for fishing from shore because of forest and thickets etc. Anyone fishing must, in accordance with the right of public access, show consideration to residents by the river and, for example, must not enter developed plots or walk on sown arable land. Anyone with a valid permit is entitled to sport fish with a rod, not with any other fishing method. Landowners who are members of the association are entitled to fish for crayfish and set tackle such as traps. The most common fish to catch in the river are perch, pike, roach and bleak, but there are also trout, burbot, tench, carp, chub, salmon etc. Almaån is nationally known for its chub fishing; it is only in the Helgeån water system that chub occurs in Skåne. Chub is fairly difficult to outwit and not especially numerous, and not a food fish; we therefore appreciate it if you release any chub caught. Several fish species of conservation value occur in the river, namely stone loach, gudgeon and eel; chub and naturally spawning salmon also have some conservation value. All eel fishing in the river is prohibited by law. Several mussel species of conservation value occur in the river, especially the thick-shelled river mussel, which is red-listed, so do not pick up or touch mussels in the river. Otherwise too, everyone is obliged to show consideration for animals and nature in and around the river. Almaån as a whole has two hydropower stations, at Brittedal and Spånga, both with fish passes.There are several weirs and mill ponds in the river; the uppermost at Mölleröd regulates the water level of Finjasjön, and further down the river are Algustorps mölla, Eka mölla and Laxbro mölla. A small number of sea trout and salmon migrate up Almaån each year past all the obstacles and spawn in the river system. There is a small population of resident trout in the river, particularly in the tributaries; there are plans to try to remove migration barriers in the tributaries to increase the population. If you catch anything interesting in the river, for example a large fish or unusual species, contact us on the board. The board wishes you all good fishing and an enjoyable nature experience.
